Introducing ECMWF ERA5 – The Benchmark for Historical Weather Data
We are pleased to announce that ECMWF ERA5 is now part of our historical weather data offering. Developed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), ERA5 is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and rigorously validated global historical weather dataset available today.
By adding ERA5 to the stormglass API, we’re giving our customers access to research-grade, high-resolution historical weather data – delivered via a powerful, fast, and easy-to-use API.
The coverage of ERA5 is global in 0.25° spatial resolution, the data starts from 2014, and it’s accessible via the Historical Endpoint in the API. All details and the full list of weather parameters available from ERA5 is available in the API Documentation.

ERA5 is a global historical weather dataset produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). It reconstructs past weather using advanced atmospheric models and billions of observations from satellites, weather stations, ships, and more. It provides hourly, high-resolution data for a wide range of weather variables – from temperature, precipitation, and wind, to soil moisture and ocean waves.
Top Performing AI Weather Models – ECMWF AIFS and NOAA AIGFS
In case you missed it – we also added the two top performing AI weather models, ECMWF AIFS and NOAA AIGFS, to the stormglass API a while back.
The stormglass API: High-Performance Weather Data – Easy Accessable
At stormglass.io, our goal is simple: to provide the world’s most accurate weather data through a fast, powerful, and easy-to-use API. It brings us great pleasure to now be able to offer:
- ERA5 – the benchmark for historical weather data.
- ECMWF AIFS and NOAA AIGFS – the two top performing AI weather models.
- ECMWF OPER and NOAA GFS – the world’s leading numerical weather prediction models.
And a lot more…
Give it a spin!
The stormglass API is always free to test. Full feature – no hassle.
