Weather API for Commercial Fishing and Sport Fishing Applications

When and Where to Fish?

Fishing activities have always been heavily dependent on the weather – both in terms of when it’s even possible and safe to engage in the activity, but also when and where to fish to maximise the catch.

At Storm Glass we are proud to be delivering mission critical weather data to several industry leaders in the field. Looking at the data there are three main areas that are typically interesting for applications within fishing: Terrestrial- & Marine Weather, Marine Bio and Astronomy.

Terrestrial- and Marine Data

One of the most important terrestrial weather parameters to consider when fishing using a fishing rod is wind. Some sport fishing activities like fly-fishing might not be possible to perform if it’s too windy. Most anglers also certainly benefit from being informed by terrestrial weather parameters such as temperature, cloud coverage and air moisture.

Marine weather is of course key for fishing activities, both when fishing from land but especially when fishing from a boat. Looking at commercial fishing marine weather data such as waves, currents and tide are crucial to determine when it’s safe to go out at sea.

The examples above implies weather data determines when, where and how fishing activities can be performed. But the fishes themselves are of course also affected by the weather, for instance colder water and higher oxygen levels increases fish activity.

Marine Bio Data and Bathymetry

Speaking of oxygen levels there are also more marine bio parameters that are highly relevant to consider in order to maximize the catch such as plankton levels, PH and Salinity. The Storm Glass API does not only provide weather information, we also have a rich set of Marine bio parameters available as well as global bathymetry data.

Astronomy

The third section of data interesting for digital services within fishing is Astronomy. Sunrise/sunset, nautical dawn/nautical dusk is useful for sportfishing activities to know when to set your alarm (and when to call it a day). The Storm Glass API also contains detailed Moon data such as Moon phase, moon rise/moon set that probably affect the fishes more than the anglers.
