If everything goes as planned, Yara Birkeland will be in operation in 2022 replacing 40 000 truck journeys between Porsgrunn and Brevik every year.
Next step is to make Yara autonomous after two years of testing and certification processes.
The shipping industry accounts for roughly 3% of the global greenhouse emissions. Yara has capacity of carrying 103 containers and uses a 7MWh battery to take it to a top speed of 13 knots.
Considering how many shipping routes there is in the world where a ship like Yara could be operational it could certainly make an impact.
